Nyiragongo Volcano Trek

Sleeping on the rim of the world’s largest lava lake.

Happy Friday!

This is Adventure Fix, the weekly email that’s like Google for explorers.

Today we’re traveling to the Democratic Republic of Congo to do the Nyiragongo Volcano Trek and sleep on the rim of the world’s largest lava lake.

Rising over 11,000 feet, Nyiragongo’s caldera holds the largest lava lake in the world.

To get there requires a challenging 4-6 hour hike through dense forest, across old lava flows, and past steaming volcanic fissures.

Once at the top, exhaustion melts away as Nyiragongo offers an exhilarating gift to those who have conquered its slopes: the world’s largest lava lake churning away in a mosaic of molten red fire.

Pitching a tent on top of sharp lava rocks doesn’t sound fun.

Luckily there are a dozen or so metal A-frame cabins that cling to the mountainside, providing a place to rest for the night.
