Mardi Himal Trek

In the shadow of the Fishtail.

Hey there!

Welcome to Adventure Fix, the newsletter that helps you discover extraordinary journeys and experiences across the globe.

Today, we’re heading to Kande, Nepal to hike the Mardi Himal Trek.

It’s a short but challenging up-and-back ridge hike that offers beautiful views of the Annapurna mountain range.

What sets the Mardi Himal Trek apart from its more renowned counterparts like the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit is its serene, unspoiled nature.

Here, there are fewer villages and more untouched wilderness, creating a unique experience for trekkers.

The Mardi Himal Trek is a ridge hike, one of our favorite types of routes.

That’s because once you get out of the forest and into the alpine zone you have constant views of snow-capped peaks on both sides.

As you go up the ridge, Machhapuchhare a.k.a Fishtail Moutain gets closer and closer.

Navigating the trail is a breeze, thanks to its clear and well-marked path, making it an excellent choice for people new to hiking.

The trail is dotted with traditional teahouses where you can rest for the night and grab a bite to eat.

These stops make this trail more accessible, there’s no need to carry a sleeping bag, tent, stove, or food.

Not only will your back appreciate the lighter load but having to lug less gear means you can be fully absorbed in the nature around you.

The total distance of the trek is about 25 miles (40km). Most people finish it in 4 days but you could stretch it out to a whole week if you take it easy and stop at every camp.

The best time to tackle the Mardi Himal is between October and November. If that doesn’t work for you, March to May is the second best time.

How to Hike the Mardi Himal Trek

Many people choose to fly into the lakeside town of Pokhara then take a one-hour shuttle or taxi to Kande, and start the hike from there.

As of April 1st, 2023, foreigners are not allowed to go solo trekking in Nepalese National Parks. Having a licensed guide is required.

The highest point on the Mardi Himal trail is 14,700 ft (4500m), so you’ll need to be acclimatized before attempting this trek. Poon Hil and the Annapurna Panorama Trek are two popular options.

We hope your travels take you in this direction very soon.

Until then - keep exploring!
