DIVING

Flying carpets and moonbeams in Hawaii

You're on your knees at 35 feet below the ocean's surface when a group of manta rays comes flying into view.

Snorkelers are on the surface holding their dive lights downward, and divers are on the bottom with their lights pointing up, creating a beam of light that radiates through the water column. The light attracts plankton, an all-time favorite meal for mantas.

Dozens of these magic carpets do acrobatic flips through the water as they swoop through the thick clouds of plankton with their mouths open.

Mantas have great taste when it comes to choosing beautiful places to live, and this one is no exception. In Kona, Hawaii, these incredible night dives are pretty much a year-round event, with mantas sightings almost guaranteed.

Watch this: Kona's Manta Dive. Some call this the world's best night dive. Do you agree?

HIKING

Exploring the largest cave on Earth

Photo: Cameraptor

Grab your boots and flashlight because we're heading to the rainforest of Vietnam. But instead of going up a mountain, we're going deep below the surface.

Let's explore the world's largest cave: Son Doong.

Adventurous trekkers can explore this subterranean world that was carved out by an underground spring over 3 million years ago.

Spend days inside the cave scrambling through chambers and hiking past stalagmites the size of buildings. Enter a cavern with a passage large enough that a Boeing 747 could fly through it.The ceiling has collapsed at some points, creating skylights that allow light to shine into the cave, allowing jungle trees to grow. Birds, monkeys, and flying foxes zoom across the canopy above. The walls sparkle with minerals. A fast-flowing river leads to volcanic rock lagoons and sandy beaches ideal for setting up camp.

Do you want to explore a place that has been seen by fewer people than those who have stood on the summit of Mount Everest?

Capture nature's light show

Photo: Capture the Atlas

Imagine being bundled up in your best winter clothes. It is so quiet you can hear the silence ring in your ears.

The cold air fills your lungs while you stare at the dark sky admiring the distance stars twinkling above.

Then you spot something. Is it a cloud? Could be but you've never seen a cloud waving like that before. As you stare more intently it begins to grow and take shape.

The white wave turns to green as bands of light begin to dance and stretch across the skies. Waves of purple, blue and red take the stage.

Nature is putting on a spectacular show, and it feels like it is just for you.

Wanna know where you can go to have this fairy tale experience?

Read this: Best places to see the Northern Lights. Here are the top 10 destinations to witness this mystical phenomenon. Two are to watch the Southern Hemisphere counterpart, the Aurora Australis.

It also includes extra resources to get the most out of the hunt like photography tips, an aurora forecast app, and photo tour options.

PADDLING

A larger-than-life canoe trip

Want to ditch the safari jeep and experience Africa's wildlife in a less sedentary, more adventurous way? We've got just the trip for you.

How does spending a week canoeing down the Zambezi River sound?

Imagine the ores of your boat slicing through the gentle waves, propelling you down the mighty river through the endless savannah. Long, dry grasses rustle in the warm breeze.

Hippos poke their heads out of the water as you glide by.

On the river bank, a group of elephants is rolling around in the mud and playing with each other.

As the sun begins to creep lower toward the horizon, your group pulls over for the night and sets up camp in the middle of the African wilderness.

It's an experience that game drives and riverboat cruises just can't compete with.

OFF THE LAND

Diving for dinner in Alaska

Photo: Kimi Werner

Take a deep breath because we're digitally diving below the surface of the freezing Alaskan waters with spearfishing legend, Kimi Werner. She's caught plenty of fish but this is her first scallop dive. There are no dive tanks here, so it's like an underwater treasure hunt with a countdown timer.

Fair warning, her videos are highly addictive. We binge-watched the whole series and are desperately waiting for new ones 😳
