NATIONAL PARKS

Araucaria Forests of Conguillio National Park

Conguillío National Park, in Chile’s Araucanía Region, feels like stepping into another world. With a snow-covered volcano, bright blue lakes, and ancient lava flows, Conguillío National Park, is one of the most stunning places in Chile’s.

What really makes it special are the Araucaria araucana a.k.a monkey puzzle trees. These strange, spiky trees are Chile’s national tree and some are over a thousand years old. They’ve been around since the time of the dinosaurs and only grow naturally here.

The forests are a mix of araucarias and southern beeches like coigüe and lenga. In fall, the beech trees turn fiery red and orange, creating a wild contrast with the dark volcanic ground and deep green araucarias.

The landscape’s been shaped by eruptions, so you get lava fields, ash plains, and jagged ridges that are perfect for hiking. You can wander through forest one minute and sit on a quiet lake shore the next.

There’s plenty of wildlife too, there are woodpeckers, condors, foxes, and maybe even a puma.

Trails range from big view hikes like Sierra Nevada to short ones like Las Araucarias, where you’ll find the enormous “Mother Araucaria.”

Whether you’re here to hike, unplug, or just be somewhere totally different, Conguillío is a great choice.

REMOTE PLACES

Ennedi Plateau

Photo: Unknown

In a remote corner of the Sahara, massive sandstone arches, deep gorges, and wind-sculpted rock formations rise from the desert like natural monuments.

The Ennedi Plateau in Chad is wild and untouched, and getting there is part of the adventure. Most travelers fly into N'Djamena and then take a multi-day 4x4 journey across endless desert to reach it.

One of the highlights is Aloba Arch it's enormous, one of the biggest natural arches on Earth. And scattered around the area, you’ll find ancient rock art in caves and crocodile-filled gueltas, which are these desert pools that somehow never dry up.

What makes the place even more special is how remote and quiet it is.

You’re out camping under super clear night skies, and some days you might not see anyone else at all.

Local Toubou guides know the land like the back of their hand and share stories that really bring it to life.

It’s not the easiest destination, but that’s part of what makes it so memorable.

SCUBA DIVING

Moon Jellyfish Blooms in Alaska

Every summer, the calm, cold bays of Prince William Sound in Alaska fill up with huge blooms of moon jellies, sometimes there are so many it’s hard to believe what you’re seeing.

They’re just floating everywhere, totally silent, pulsing gently all around you.

The dive can feel hypnotic. The water’s usually a deep green, and when the sun hits just right, the jellyfish start to glow a bit, like little ghosts.

Some blooms are so thick it’s like swimming through jellyfish soup, but not in a scary way. More like being inside a living snow globe.

What I love about this dive is there’s no need to chase anything or rush. The whole experience invites you to slow down and take it in.
