UNIQUE EXPERIENCES
Kenya Horse Safari

Photo: Borana Conservancy
Going on a horseback safari at Kenya’s Borana Conservancy is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that actually lives up to the hype. You're out there riding through the bush on a horse, with giraffes and zebras walking nearby like it’s no big deal.
It's quiet and peaceful—you can actually hear the sounds of the wild, and you’re close enough to the animals that you feel like you’re part of the landscape, not just passing through it.
What’s cool about Borana is that it’s not just about tourism, it’s a full-on conservation project. The money from your stay helps protect rhinos, fund local schools and clinics, and support the rangers who patrol the area.
If you're lucky, you might even get to go out with the anti-poaching team and track rhinos on foot.
You don’t need to be a pro rider to do this either. They’ve got horses for all experience levels, and the rides can be anything from a chilled-out morning loop to a full-on adventure where you're cantering across the plains or riding into camp at sunset.
And if you're really up for it, you can do an overnight trip where you ride all day, then sleep in a remote tented camp under the stars with no one else around.
The scenery is next level too. One minute you’re riding through open grasslands, the next you’re in a shady forest or crossing a river.
Even when you're back at the lodge, it’s stunning. It’s set up on a hill with views over a watering hole where elephants and buffalo come to drink.
If you’re into horses or just want to do a safari that feels different and way more connected to nature, Borana is it.

MIGRATIONS
Round Island Walrus Migration

Every spring and summer, thousands of male Pacific walruses show up on Round Island, Alaska.
Located in Bristol Bay, this remote island becomes one of the best places in the world to see the massive migration of these incredible animals as they come ashore to rest between foraging trips in the Bering Sea.
The scene is wild. They haul themselves out of the water and crowd the beaches—big, blubbery bodies piled up, tusks everywhere, making all kinds of grunts and growls. It’s loud, smelly, and kind of amazing.
You can actually go out there and watch it all happen. There are a few lookout points on the island where you can get a really good view without bothering the animals.
And it's not just walruses, there are sea lions, puffins flying around, and sometimes even bears wandering along the coast.
Getting there isn’t super easy. Most people take a boat or a small plane from places like Togiak or Dillingham.
There’s no hotel or anything, just a few basic campsites and no cell service, but if you're into wildlife, it's 100% worth the effort.

STAYS
Kusu Island Resort

Like one reviewer on Trip Advisor put it, “The resort Kusu Island is an insider tip for divers and snorkelers!”
This tiny, laid-back retreat feels like dropping off the map—in the best way possible. Found in a quiet corner of Indonesia’s South Halmahera region, this place is all about peace, nature, and seriously good diving.
There are only eight overwater villas, each one simple, beautiful, and perched right above the reef. You can hop straight into the ocean from your deck, chill in a hammock, or shower outdoors under the stars.
The diving and snorkeling here are next level. The house reef is right there, and dozens of other sites are just a short boat ride away—think turtles, rays, baby sharks, and colorful coral gardens. Even if you’re not a diver, the snorkeling alone is worth the trip.
On land, you can hike for island views, paddle around in a wooden canoe, or just kick back with a good book. Meals are fresh and tasty, often served with a view of the reef where stingrays and little sharks glide by.
What we love about this place is it’s not up tight, the vibe is super personal—Barbara and Chris, who run the place, make you feel like you’re staying with friends.
If you’re after quiet, nature, and world-class underwater adventures, Kusu’s hard to beat.
