HIKING

Yulla Kunda Trek

Hiking the Yulla Kanda Trek feels more like going on a spiritual journey than just ticking off another mountain trail. It's way out in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh—pretty remote, not super well known, and definitely not crowded.

The trail takes you up through wildflower-covered hills, rocky ridgelines, and open alpine meadows until you hit this peaceful little lake sitting at around 14,500 feet (4,420 meters).

The lake, Yulla Kanda, is considered sacred by the locals. According to legend, it’s where Lord Shiva came to meditate—and honestly, once you’re up there, it totally makes sense.

The place is quiet, almost otherworldly. You’re surrounded by towering peaks, the air is crisp, and everything just feels... still.

This isn’t one of those well-marked, tourist-heavy hikes with tea houses every few miles.

It’s more raw and remote—you might run into a few shepherds or local pilgrims, but that’s about it. The best time to go is late summer or early fall, when the weather’s settled and the trails are clear.

If you’re looking for something a little offbeat, peaceful, and full of natural beauty, this trek really delivers.

REMOTE PLACES

Queen Maud Land

Visiting Queen Maud Land is like landing on another planet. It’s way out there—even by Antarctica standards. No penguin colonies, no tourist boats, no signs of life. Just towering rock spires, endless ice, and total silence. It’s wild in the truest sense.

Most people get flown in on a ski plane from Cape Town and land on this massive blue ice runway. From there, it’s all about backcountry adventure.

Climbers come to take on those crazy-looking peaks like Ulvetanna, some researchers set up remote science camps, and a few lucky travelers get to explore with guided expeditions—on skis, by foot, or even by small plane.

The landscape is just unreal.

Sharp mountains shoot up out of the ice, and the light, especially during the 24-hour daylight in summer, makes everything look even more dramatic.

It’s not an easy trip, and it’s definitely not about comfort, but if you’re after something totally off the radar, this is it.

PADDLING

Kayaking the Strait of Magellan

Kayaking through the Strait of Magellan and the fjords of Tierra del Fuego is a rare kind of wilderness adventure—one where the remoteness hits you immediately.

This 7-day expedition runs in mothership mode, meaning you paddle each day from a comfortable support boat that travels with you.

That setup lets you reach far-flung fjords and coastlines without having to camp in the cold or haul gear, just pure paddling, wildlife, and wild landscapes by day, and a warm place to sleep at night.

The route takes you past the southern tip of mainland South America, by places like San Isidro Lighthouse and Cape Froward, and deep into whale territory in the Francisco Coloane Marine Park.

You’re likely to spot humpbacks, sea lions, dolphins, penguins, and more—all from the seat of your kayak.

At one point, you’ll also go ashore to hike in Karukinka Natural Park, exploring ancient forests and windswept ridges while learning about local conservation work.

You don’t need to be an expert paddler—guides are there to support you, and gear is provided. The weather can throw everything at you in one day—sun, sleet, wind—but with the mothership as your base, you’re well taken care of.

It’s a true Patagonian experience: bold, beautiful, and completely unforgettable.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

Mark Twain
