STAYS

Seal River Heritage Lodge

Staying at Seal River Heritage Lodge feels like dropping off the edge of the map—in the best way.

It’s about a 30-minute flight from Churchill, Manitoba, and lands you right on the edge of Hudson Bay, where polar bears wander past the windows and beluga whales cruise through the shallows.

You’re completely off-grid, but in a cozy, comfortable way, with warm beds, crackling fires, and good company.

The lodge is small, just eight guest rooms, which means it never feels crowded.

Big windows look out over the tundra and the bay, and there’s even a lookout tower if you want to spot bears or watch the Northern Lights without freezing.

Meals are shared at a big table, and the food is way better than you'd expect for a place this remote—fresh-baked bread, wild Arctic char, and desserts that make it hard to stop at one bite.

Days are spent out exploring. You head out on foot or by boat with experienced guides who really know the land and the wildlife.

Sometimes you’re just sitting quietly while a polar bear strolls by at a safe distance, or watching a pod of belugas glide right past. And between the wildlife, the landscape, and the stories from the guides, you end up learning a lot without even realizing it.

Evenings are slow and peaceful. People hang out in the lounge, flipping through wildlife books or swapping stories over a glass of wine.

If the Northern Lights come out, everyone grabs a blanket and heads outside. It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left—a mix of adventure, stillness, and a whole lot of wonder.

NATIONAL PARKS

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is way out there, right where Mongolia touches Russia and China, and it’s stunning. You’ve got massive snow-covered peaks, wide-open alpine valleys, glaciers, and crystal-clear lakes.

The big draw is the "Five Holy Peaks," especially Khüiten, Mongolia’s tallest mountain.

If you’re not a mountaineer, no problem, Malchin Peak is hikeable and offers views right into China and Russia.

The Potanin Glacier is also out here, and you can walk right up to it, with the cold air rolling off the ice.

Down from the mountains, you’ll find stunning lakes like Khoton and Khurgan, perfect for camping and spotting wildlife.

The park is also full of ancient petroglyphs and sacred sites, and you’ll probably run into local Kazakh herders along the way.

One of the best ways to explore this area is on a fatbike. The terrain’s perfect for it, and you get to cover more ground while still feeling totally off the grid.

If that sounds like your kind of adventure, check out this Altai fatbike trip—it’s an epic way to see one of the wildest corners of Mongolia.

PADDLING

Sea Kayaking Belize’s Glover’s Reef

Photo: Island Expeditions

If you’re into tropical sea kayaking, Glover’s Reef in Belize is a dream.

It’s this remote coral atoll about 40 miles off the coast, with calm, crystal-clear water and tons of marine life, rays, turtles, and colorful fish.

You paddle over shallow reefs that feel like an aquarium, and it’s super peaceful thanks to the natural protection of the reef.

You don’t have to be an expert paddler either. Most trips include a quick skills session, and you can even use a double kayak with a sail to catch the wind and cruise between islands.

It’s a fun mix of paddling, snorkeling, and relaxing on tiny cays with sandy beaches and rustic eco-lodges.

Days are spent exploring the atoll, stopping to snorkel, maybe trying paddleboarding or even kayak surfing. Evenings are all about fresh seafood, hammocks, and sunsets.

You can also add in things like fishing, yoga, or visiting a reef research station. It’s adventurous but super chill, the kind of trip that’s both exciting and easy to enjoy.
