HIKING
Michinoku Coastal Trail
If you’re looking for a hike that’s beautiful, meaningful, and totally under the radar, you should check out the Michinoku Coastal Trail in northeastern Japan.
It runs for about 620 miles (1,000 km) along the Pacific coast and passes through small towns, beaches, forests, and cliffside paths.
The trail was created after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami to help reconnect the region, and hiking it feels like being part of something bigger than just a walk through nature.
The landscapes are stunning, but what really makes this trail special is the people. You’ll pass quiet fishing villages where locals might wave you down to chat or even offer you a snack or cup of tea.
You’ll walk past shrines, through pine forests, and along wild, rocky coastline with wide open views of the sea. There’s this great mix of peaceful nature and real, everyday life.
The best part?
You don’t have to hike the whole thing. It’s easy to pick a section and just do a few days, or more if you’re feeling adventurous.
The trail is well-marked, there are signs in English, and you’re usually not far from a town with food, a place to sleep, and maybe a hot bath.
It’s not a hardcore wilderness trek—it’s more of a slow, thoughtful journey that lets you experience a side of Japan most people never see.

WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS
Spot Okapi in DRC
If you’ve never heard of an okapi, you’re not alone—but seeing one in the wild in the DRC feels like discovering a hidden treasure.
The okapi looks like a mix between a giraffe and a zebra, with velvety brown fur and striking striped legs. It sounds made up, but it’s real—and only found in one place on Earth: the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
To see one, you have to head deep into the Ituri Forest to the Okapi Wildlife Reserve. It’s not exactly an easy trip. Most travelers fly into a remote town like Epulu; from there, it’s rough roads, jungle treks, and a lot of patience. But the adventure is half the story.
The forest is alive in every direction—thick greenery, bird calls, rustling leaves. And then, if you’re lucky, you catch a glimpse. The okapi moves like a shadow—quiet, graceful, almost mythical.
The reserve is more than just a place to see okapis. It’s a crucial conservation area that protects not only these animals but also forest elephants, chimpanzees, leopards, and hundreds of bird species. It’s also home to the Mbuti and Efe people, who have lived in the forest for generations.
Seeing an okapi at the Okapi Wildlife Reserve isn’t your typical safari experience. It takes effort, curiosity, and a willingness to go far off the beaten path. But that’s what makes it unforgettable.

NATURAL WONDERS
Tuzbair Salt Marsh
Visiting Tuzbair Salt Marsh is a vast, blindingly white salt flat in western Kazakhstan, surrounded by dramatic chalk cliffs that rise from the earth. The landscape shifts with the weather—dry and cracked in the heat, then smooth and mirror-like after rain, reflecting the sky in every direction. It’s eerie, silent, and stunning.
Tuzbair is tucked away in the Mangystau Region, known for its surreal terrain. Most people set out from Aktau with a 4x4 and a guide, since the roads are rough and there’s zero infrastructure—no gas, no signal, no shops. It’s the kind of place that makes the noise of daily life feel very far away.
The white chalk cliffs above the salt flat are especially striking at sunrise and sunset, when the light makes everything glow. Many travelers camp along the edge—if you do, bring warm clothes and a good camera. The stars out here are unreal.
Spring and fall are the best times to visit, when the weather’s more forgiving. Bring plenty of water, food, and a solid navigation plan. And if you’ve got a drone, bring it—the aerial views are incredible.
Tuzbair isn’t easy to reach, but that’s part of the magic. If you’re up for the adventure, it’s one of those places you’ll never forget.
