WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES

Trekking mountain gorillas in Uganda

Africa is famous for driving safaris, but gorilla trekking is an entirely different encounter. Unlike traditional safaris, there’s nothing between you and these wild animals, and the only way to get up close is on foot.

In the depths of Uganda’s Bwindi National Forest, you can spend one magical hour with a gorilla family.

The booming sound of the massive silverback echoes through the forest. Young gorillas play high up in the trees. Mothers nurse their babies. Adolescents fight over food. Just another typical day among gorillas.

Coming face to face with these powerful animals is an exhilarating and humbling experience like no other.

If so, this next one is for you.

NATURAL WONDERS

Appalachia’s greatest light show

As the sun begins to dip below the horizon in Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountain National Park, a remarkable phenomenon begins to unfold.

The forest comes to life with an otherworldly glow that seems to pulse in unison. For a brief window of time each late spring, fireflies put on a dazzling display of synchronized flashing, creating an unforgettable light show.

Unlike other firefly species in North America, these unique insects emit a distinct flash pattern, with a sudden burst of bright light followed by a brief period of darkness.

The mesmerizing display is a mating ritual where male fireflies zoom around the forest, flashing in perfect harmony, while the females respond from the ground with two quick pulses to mark their location.

It's a sight that will transport you back to a world of childlike wonder.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Editing wildlife photos with AI

Photo: Olle Nilsson

Artificial intelligence. It’s all the buzz lately. While some embrace it with open arms, others approach it with caution. No matter how you choose to see it, there's no denying that AI is a powerful tool that can revolutionize the world of wildlife photography.

Gone are the days when photographers had to spend countless hours tweaking their images through manual editing. Thanks to AI, removing noise from your hummingbird photo, or sharpening the eyes of the humpback you shot while diving in Tonga is easier than ever before.

But this technology isn't just about streamlining workflows and simplifying the editing process. By harnessing the power of sophisticated algorithms, photographers can take their creativity to the next level. You can now push the boundaries of traditional photography and capture the essence of wildlife in ways that were previously unimaginable.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

We have forgotten that life holds a unique story for us all. A thread made up of faint signs that lead to the manifestation of something unique. What the native people call “your medicine way.” Something that only you can give to the world.”
