The Old Ghost Road, New Zealand’s longest singletrack, follows an ancient gold miners’ route. This ultimate backcountry mountain biking and hiking trail takes you deep into Kahurangi National Park and offers a glimpse into the mindsets of the 1900s pioneers who discovered remote ghost towns along the way.
Stretching 52 miles (85 kilometers) through the wilderness of the South Island's West Coast, the trail offers a mix of challenging climbs, thrilling descents, and spectacular scenery, making it a must-do for confident mountain bikers and fit hikers alike.
The journey begins near the small town of Lyell and meanders through dense native forests, alongside sparkling rivers, and into dramatic alpine terrain.
Along the route, adventurers will find a series of well-maintained huts that provide cozy overnight accommodations, making multi-day exploration of this remote region both feasible and comfortable.
Each hut carries its own unique charm, often named after local landmarks or historical figures.
A standout feature of the Old Ghost Road is the sense of isolation and tranquility it offers. Far from the bustle of modern life, the trail immerses you in New Zealand's wild beauty, with chances to spot native wildlife, including the playful kea and the elusive kiwi.
The ever-changing landscapes—from lush rainforests to expansive alpine meadows—keep every mile exciting and visually breathtaking.
