In the vast expanse of Argentina’s Puna Desert rises a geological marvel that defies both time and imagination – the Cono de Arita.

Set on the edge of the Salar de Arizaro, on a high plateau, surrounded by salt, the dark mass makes a striking image.

At first glance, it looks like a man-made pyramid, but geologists have confirmed that this formation is a volcano that was not strong enough to explode.
