Night after night, from April to November, the sky comes alive with an astonishing average of 260 nights of lightning each year.
In its most electrifying moments, it has been known to unleash a staggering 280 bolts per hour!
The secret behind this relentless spectacle lies in the unique convergence of warm, moisture-laden air from the Caribbean Sea and the cooler air descending from the Andes Mountains.
Lake Maracaibo, acts as a natural conductor, intensifying the lightning activity.
This remarkable topography, combined with the atmospheric conditions, transforms the area into an unparalleled theater of nature's fury and beauty.

How To Visit Lake Maracaibo
If you want to witness one of the most interesting atmospheric phenomena, your best option is to go on a guided tour. Two good options are Osprey Expeditions and Angel Eco Tours.
We’d advise against independent travel in Venezuela at the moment, due to the security situation, but perhaps that might be a reasonably safe option in the future.
The best time to see Catatumbo Lightning is between April to November. October has the highest concentration of lightning strikes, so try to visit during that time.
We hope your travels take you in this direction very soon.
Until then - keep exploring!
