Capanna Margherita

Hiking to the highest hut in Europe.

Hey there!

Welcome to Adventure Fix, the newsletter that helps you discover extraordinary journeys and experiences across the globe.

Today, we’re heading to Alagna Valsesia, Italy to hike up to and stay the night in the highest hut in Europe.

Capanna Margherita, or “The Margherita Hut” in English, is an oasis in the sky, offering weary hikers food, drinks, and a place to rest for the night along with sweeping panoramic views of the Italian and Swiss Alps.

What’s so special about this particular mountain hut, you might ask? Well, it is perched atop the summit of Signalkuppe peak a.k.a Punta Gnifetti, at 14,941 feet (4,554 meters), making it the highest hut in Europe.

Every spring and summer, this iconic hut becomes a prime destination for hikers.

The journey kicks off from either Alagna in Piedmont or Gressoney in Val d'Aosta. Some people opt for ski lifts to zoom up, while others take it slow, savoring every step.

The trail treats you to an alpine paradise, with killer views of snowy peaks, lush valleys, and fields bursting with wildflowers.

Although the summit is not overly technical, hikers should be prepared to deal with the effects of high altitude.

Now, about Capanna Margherita itself. It’s this iconic spot that feels like an exclusive club for hikers and climbers.

Spending a night there is like earning a badge of honor, a testament to your adventurous spirit.

But let’s not sugarcoat it—it’s not a luxurious staycation up there.

At that height, sleepless nights and pounding headaches often come with the territory.

Yet, despite the discomfort, the lure of conquering those towering heights and experiencing that sense of accomplishment keeps beckoning adventurers back, year after year, drawn by the challenge and the beauty of the Italian Alps in all their glory.
