Every spring and fall, thousands of mobula rays gather in Baja California’s Sea of Cortez, especially around La Paz and Cabo Pulmo, putting on an incredible show with their acrobatic leaps out of the water.
These rays can jump several feet into the air, flipping and somersaulting, which scientists think might be for communication, finding mates, or even getting rid of parasites.
Mobula rays are like smaller, faster cousins to manta rays and can swim at impressive speeds of up to 22 miles per hour. Baja’s nutrient-rich waters make it a perfect spot for them, with plenty of plankton to feed on.
This migration is a highlight for divers and snorkelers who get the rare chance to swim alongside thousands of these beautiful, graceful creatures in massive schools. It’s a mesmerizing sight and a must-do for ocean lovers looking to witness something truly special in Baja’s waters.
