Altai Tavan Bogd National Park is way out there, right where Mongolia touches Russia and China, and it’s stunning. You’ve got massive snow-covered peaks, wide-open alpine valleys, glaciers, and crystal-clear lakes.
The big draw is the "Five Holy Peaks," especially Khüiten, Mongolia’s tallest mountain.
If you’re not a mountaineer, no problem, Malchin Peak is hikeable and offers views right into China and Russia.
The Potanin Glacier is also out here, and you can walk right up to it, with the cold air rolling off the ice.
Down from the mountains, you’ll find stunning lakes like Khoton and Khurgan, perfect for camping and spotting wildlife.
The park is also full of ancient petroglyphs and sacred sites, and you’ll probably run into local Kazakh herders along the way.
One of the best ways to explore this area is on a fatbike. The terrain’s perfect for it, and you get to cover more ground while still feeling totally off the grid.
If that sounds like your kind of adventure, check out this Altai fatbike trip—it’s an epic way to see one of the wildest corners of Mongolia.
